Hardware Stores and Lumber Yards Local Or Big Box?
When you need supplies parts or materials were do you go? It appears to me more and more people are heading to the local big box stores. Lowes, Home Depot, Menards or whatever you have locally. I would suggest that next time you think about stopping at your local lumber yard or hardware store. Ace, True Value, Do-it-Best, Jim’s lumber, you get the idea. Here is why I feel this way.
Convenience
Have you seen the parking lot and checkout lines at the local big box on Saturday morning? It is much simpler to run into a hardware store to grab a few items. In and out quick and easy, if you want to spend more time go ahead and wander through the sporting goods section, but don’t spend that time standing in line at a big box.
Price
I think one big factor that drives people to the big box stores is the assumption that prices are lower. Buyer beware though, big box stores often negotiate deals with manufactures to produce a lower quality product line at a discounted price. Make sure your comparing apples to apples. Even if you are comparing identical items, prices tend to be very competitive.
Advise
You have a much better chance of finding a knowledgeable and helpful person at a local seller. I know there are knowledgeable people at the big boxes also, but the odds are against you. At the local hardware store or lumber yard you may very well be talking to the owner. I think it’s safe to say that is not going to happen in a big box store. If you frequent your local stores you will learn who is most knowledgeable in certain trades. Many store workers have been plumbers, carpenters, electrician or floor installers in the past. They have a wealth of information and are happy to share it.
Selection
Big box stores do tend to have a broader selection of products. But most local stores have a pretty amazing variety of products as well. Many people may not be aware that most local stores can order almost anything you need and have it in a few days. They usually have an extensive network of suppliers and can find almost anything you could ever need. From specialty products to repair and replacement parts.
I will admit I do shop at the big boxes from time to time, but more often than not you will find me at the lumber yard or local hardware stores. For my money you just can’t beat the service.
So think about shopping locally next time you need supplies for your next project. You will be happy you did.
