Everyone needs more garage storage room or basement shelving. Here is an easy wood shelf storage system you can build yourself. These can be made any size to suite your storage and organizing needs.

Storage Shelf System (bottom shelf board left off for clarity)

The example in the photo is eight feet long and eight feet tall. The shelves are twelve inches deep. Sometimes it’s nice to have shallow shelving. If you make them too deep it is hard to find small items on them.

This shelf system consists of 1″ x 4″ pine shelf frame and legs. No need to waste money on heavy framing lumber. For the shelves you can use almost anything. 1/4″ lauan or plywood is heavy enough to support many things, because the shelves are not that deep and they have cross pieces every two feet. You may have or be able to find scraps of ply wood to use and make them even cheaper. I suggest using screw to assemble the shelf system, and make sure to securely screw the shelf to the wall at the top so it can not tip over.

Shelf Plan Detail (Lower Shelf board Removed)

You can easily adapt the shelf storage plan to suit your needs. Make the shelf shorter, place two in an L shape to make a corner. Adjust the spacing between the shelves depending upon what you are trying to organize.

Have fun, and get that messy garage or basement cleaned up and organized!
I will leave it up to you how many you want to do in one afternoon.

Tighten loose door knob screws, adding removable lock-tite to the threads will prevent them from becoming loose again.

Lube door hinges with Liquid Wrench Dry Lubricant to prolong hinge life

Fix loose cabinet door hinge screws by removing the screw, and inserting a piece of a wooden tooth pick and reinstalling the screw

Change your furnace filter, write the next scheduled change date on the filter frame with a marker. No! You will not remember, just do what I tell you and stop arguing with me. Four beers makes you a little belligerent I guess, do I have to cut you off already?

Change your smoke alarm batteries. You did not just do it! That was about 3 years ago when you bought them, ya now it’s coming back to you isn’t it?

Change the toilet paper roll next time it’s empty. She has been after you to get that done for years now. So you should just do it and cross it off her list for ever.

Add your tasks to the list in the comments section below. More tasks equals more beer!

Matthias Wandel over at Woodengears has an excellent photo tutorial on how to install a electrical outlet in a finished drywall wall. The same basic principle can be used to ad a switch as well. Read it carefully grab a few basic tools and cross it off your to do list.

When your done being an electrician look around at some of his other projects. He has designed and created some very useful and interesting projects. Wooden machines, some great jigs, woodworking plans, a bunch of great stuff. This site is really a must see. I always enjoy checking in to see what great ideas he has created.
Everyone knows remodeling can be full of surprises and unexpected events. Take the obvious facts that you know and create your plans. Just keep it in the back of your mind that unknown conditions can and will appear and will make themselves known at some point. In the photo is a wall I opened up. This wall had no outlets or switches on it. I assumed I would encounter a wire or two, but I did not expect to find this. Behold the perfect example of a bad example, never ever do something like this.

Level of difficulty: Beginner

Installing smoke detectors in your home is quick, inexpensive and essential to you and your family’s safety. Determine the type of smoke detector you wish to install. Battery operated, stand-alone units are inexpensive, low maintenance and readily available at your local True Value hardware store.

When purchasing smoke detectors, be sure also to select one specifically made for the kitchen to reduce false alarms. Other areas of your home may require special detectors as well. Ask your True Value expert for advice on which detector is right for which location. Be sure to test your detectors monthly and change the batteries twice a year (when you change your clocks). According to national research, the majority of smoke detectors fail due to missing, disconnected or dead batteries.

Materials List:

Screwdrivers
10-ft. or 25-ft. tape measure
Batteries
Pencil

Step 1: Simple Solution for Safety

Stand-alone battery-operated smoke detectors are inexpensive and easy to install. Detectors are unobtrusive and should be located on all floors of your house. Use the tape measure to place them evenly throughout your home in foyers, stairwells and hallways. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms or garages, as there are often sources that can trip the sensor and cause false alarms or else purchase those that are specifically made for these areas.

Step 2: Test the Alarm

Be sure to thoroughly read the instructions included with the smoke detector before beginning. Install the batteries in the detector and depress the test button to make sure the alarm works.

Step 3: Install the Detector

Following any specific directions that come with the detector, use the drill and screws to mount the back plate of the smoke detector to the wall or ceiling. Check to be sure the battery is correctly installed and replace the front cover of the unit.

Step 4: Enjoy Peace of Mind

Your house and family now have an extra level of protection!
